What homeschooling has taught me

When people think about homeschooling, they often think about maths, reading, writing and science. While I have learned all of those things, homeschooling has taught me much more than academic subjects. It has taught me about confidence, creativity, communication, patience and believing in myself.
When I first started learning with Scarlett, I felt calm and excited. I had worked with different teachers before, so I was ready to begin a new learning journey and see what I could achieve.
One of the biggest areas I have improved in is my writing. I have written journals, worked on blogs and learned how to organise my ideas into paragraphs. I have also learned how to include my thoughts, feelings and reflections in my writing, which helps me express myself more clearly.
Another thing I never expected to learn was how to use AI effectively. At first, I thought you could simply ask AI for something and it would know exactly what you wanted. I soon discovered that AI works best when you give it clear and detailed instructions. This taught me how important communication is and how to explain my ideas properly.
One of the most exciting things I have done is create my own brand and website. I designed a logo, explored colour palettes and learned how to share my ideas online. This made me feel creative and independent.
In maths, my favourite activities were word problems and problem-solving tasks. I enjoyed figuring things out, thinking through different possibilities and finding solutions. These activities taught me that there is often more than one way to approach a challenge.
I also enjoyed learning about Anne Frank. Her journal showed me how powerful writing can be and how important it is to record thoughts, experiences and ideas.
Art has probably taught me the most about myself. There was a time when I felt negative about my artwork and doubted my abilities. I thought that if something was difficult, it meant I was not good at it. Over time, I learned that improvement comes from patience, practice and dedication.
What surprised me most was discovering what I could achieve when I put my mind to something. I learned how to mix colours, create layers, add texture and develop my own style. The thing I am most proud of is my half-sunrise, half-sunset art piece. It took several days to create, and I had to be patient and keep trying. When I finished it, I realised how much I had improved.
The biggest thing I have learned is how to calm my mind and stop being so negative about myself. The skill I have improved the most is my mindset. Instead of thinking, “I can’t do this,” I now try to think, “I can’t do this yet, but I can keep trying.” That small change has made a big difference.
Not every part of learning was easy. My least favourite topic was dealing with my frustration when something didn’t go the way I wanted it to. However, this was also one of the most important lessons. I learned that feeling frustrated is normal and that patience, practice and perseverance help me move forward.
Homeschooling has also taught me important life skills. I have learned how to adapt to different environments, speak confidently to new people, organise my belongings and take responsibility for my learning. These are skills that I know will help me throughout my life.
Looking ahead, I would like to learn more about art and how creativity can help people relax and express themselves. I am also most excited to learn patience because I know it is a skill that will help me continue growing.
Looking back, I am proud of how much I have grown. Homeschooling has taught me that learning is not just about getting the right answers. It is about becoming more confident, more creative and more willing to keep trying, even when things are difficult.
Most importantly, it has taught me that I am capable of much more than I ever thought possible.
