The Power of Zero: One Small Digit, One Big Difference!

Have you ever thought about how powerful the number zero really is?

Recently, during my homeschooling maths lesson, I was recapping place value and working with seven-digit numbers.

One thing I found challenging was putting zeros in the correct places. It might seem like a small mistake, but I discovered that adding just one zero can make a HUGE difference!

For example, I was looking at the number 89,672.

If I put a zero at the end, it becomes 896,720. That’s exactly 10 times bigger!

But if I put the zero between the 9 and the 6, it becomes 890,672. That’s almost 10 times bigger than the original number.

To help me understand this, we created an image showing what 89,672 dots would look like compared to 890,672 dots.

Seeing the difference visually made me realise just how much one digit can change the value of a number!

I also learnt that adding two zeros at the end of a number makes it 100 times bigger.

What did I learn from this?

Sometimes, understanding something isn’t just about looking at numbers on a page. It’s about finding a different way to see the problem.

As a young athlete, I know that small details can make a big difference, whether that’s in my running technique or my maths.

My biggest takeaway? Never underestimate the power of small things. Even a zero can make a massive difference!

Small but powerful! I’m impressed by the way you described how the different positions of the zero changes a number completely. This shows you understand what you’ve learnt. Well done!
